Flowers from Felix is a giant community flower garden at Purewa Cemetery

It was started by Miriama Toms, as a guerilla planting exercise to help with grief around losing her son Felix. As the flowers began to die, she packaged up the seeds and gave them away to anyone who wanted to plant a flower garden. Now, there are many people in the community who come and together they have created a garden that spans a great deal of the old part of the cemetery.

The garden helps to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and is a haven for wildlife, including native bees and a pair of plovers who nest in one of the plots. It’s also a haven for the volunteers who enjoy the peace, beauty, friendship and a sense of community.

Flowers from Felix has brought life to the old part of the cemetery.

You are very welcome to harvest some seeds as you wander around and use them to create your own patch of Flowers from Felix.

You will find the garden in E Block at Purewa Cemetery, radiating from the grave of Felix Jack Murray, near X Block.
